This is the forty-first annual national juried exhibition produced by the Associates of the Brand Library & Art Center. Sixty-five works on paper in a variety of media dealing with the theme, Memories, have been selected. The Brand Associates Purchase Award and other awards will be presented during the reception on Friday, October 5. The awards are made possible by generous donations from the community, Associates members, local merchants and other affiliated arts organizations.
This exciting exhibition features the work of 55 artists who are local residents from Glendale, Pasadena, Los Angeles, various San Gabriel and San Fernando Valley cities and other parts of California. The Brand Works on Paper exhibitions have gained recognition and popularity through their years of existence. Judging the large number of outstanding works is both enjoyable and daunting. It is a privilege to see so much exciting art; it is difficult to have so few spaces to show it. Thus the final selections become painful.
This year's juror, Bonese Collins Turner, states that "beyond obvious concerns with design, technical skills, and creativity a juror may also look for humor, a message, a unique viewpoint or a quality of mystery. Each juror tries to be as fair and objective as possible, but of course each person is affected by his/her training, experiences and culture. Wonderful qualities will be found in this exhibit; there is great variety and paper was used in remarkable ways. These artists share their skills, emotion, vitality, strength and individual concepts with us, the viewing audience. Enjoy their creations! The annual national juried exhibitions have been organized and sponsored by the Associates of Brand Library since 1971. The current organizer of this annual exhibition is Associates Board Member Irena Raulinaitis, and she remarks, "This year's Works on Paper exhibit, Brand 41, deals with the many aspects of Memories as interpreted by artists in the various techniques: sculpture, prints, paintings, computer art, photography, etc., all on paper." Raulinaitis, with support from the Associates Board of Directors, has been instrumental in organizing this year's exhibition, soliciting donations for the awards, and publicizing its presence nationally to attract artists to participate.
Juror: Bonese Collins Turner is an artist, designer, educator who deals primarily with drawing, painting and printmaking. Her work has been exhibited in the White House, the Smithsonian Institution, the Butler Institute of American Art, the Rocky Mountain National and numerous other exhibitions. Her works hang in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., Home Savings & Loan, Los Angeles, CA, Oregon Council for the Arts, Newport, OR, Nebraska Public Libraries Collection, Lincoln, NE among others. She serves on the advisory board to the College of Art & Architecture at the University of Idaho and has been selected by the Dale Chihuly Foundation to teach watercolor seminars: she has served as a juror of numerous national exhibitions. She is featured in Who's Who in the West, Who's Who in American Art, Who's Who in American Women, the California Art Review, and many other publications. Recently she was included in the new book 100 Artists of the West Coast.
The Associates of Brand Library is a non-profit volunteer organization whose purpose is to aid and promote the Brand Library & Art Center through sponsorship of programs and donations, and to foster art and music education in the community.
