A Celebration of Jazz

February 6 – February 19, 2010

The Brand Library pays tribute to the vibrant Los Angeles area jazz scene in pictures, sound, and words!

Two weeks of programming includes concerts, film screenings, and talks with musicians and artists, organized around The Performance Portraits of Bob Barry, an exhibition of the Los Angeles based photographer's remarkable award winning images.

All events are free and open to the public and will take place at the Brand Library.





February 6 - 19, 2010
The Performance Portraits of Bob Barry

Opening reception: Saturday, February 6, 6:00 – 9:00 pm

With a performance by guitarist Pat Kelley, professor, USC Thornton School of Music’s Studio/Jazz Guitar Department and a mainstay in the Los Angeles recording and jazz scene for twenty-five years.

Sunday, February 7, 1:30 pm

Panel discussion: Jazz Imaging: The Digital Future

YouTube, iPhones and other new technologies are rapidly and dramatically changing the way visual images of the jazz world are captured, displayed and archived. As creators and consumers of jazz imagery our panelists are themselves instruments of change in this revolution. Discussion will focus on where we are going and what it will mean for future generations of jazz audiences and jazz imagery viewers.

Moderator: Bill Wishner, Chair, Milt Hinton Award for Excellence in Jazz.

Panelists: Bob Barry, photographer; Greg Carroll, CEO, American Jazz Museum; Randall Kremer, Dir. of Public Affairs, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution; Cynthia Sesso, curator and appraiser.

Film screening: Keeping Time: The Life, Music & Photographs of Milt Hinton

Written and Directed by David G. Berger, Holly Maxson and Kate Hirson. Narrated by Jeffrey Wright. Combining rare pictures, footage and interviews with legendary musicians, this is an insider’s portrait of jazz history.

Panelists will engage in a candid and lively dialog on the current state and future of the jazz music industry.

Film screening: A Great Day in Harlem

Quincy Jones narrates the story of Art Kane’s historic 1958 group photograph of the period’s jazz legends; includes archival footage and conversations with renowned musicians.

Dr. Bobby Rodriguez, Frank Potenza, Eddie Resto, and Washington Rucker

Latin legend and Grammy Nominated recording artist Dr. Bobby Rodriguez is a trumpeter, author, and professor of jazz and Latin jazz at UCLA, UC Irvine and Pasadena City College.
