IN ITS FIRST YEAR

In its first year the Library Connection @ Adams Square has become a vital part of the neighborhood. In its 2190 square feet it is truly the little library that makes a big difference in people's lives.

"Knowing the new Adams Branch was to open, my family of six looked forward to convenient books, films, music, and periodicals. We did not realize what would be most important: the terrific staff!"

The Library Connection is led by an energetic duo: Hala Shonouda, the Library Supervisor, was also part of the team that helped design the facility and purchase the materials. Library Assistant Kristine Markosyan introduces the neighbors to the new library, presents storytimes, visits schools, and purchases Armenian, Persian and Russian books, DVDs, and CDs.

"I am so happy with the new branch! The staff is excellent and most helpful. It is also very convenient to South Glendale."

The operating schedule was determined after much community input in order to reflect the hours that best fit the schedules of those who live in the neighborhood. Between January 1, 2009 (when we began tracking the number of people in the library) and June 30, 25,856 people visited the library. That translates to an average of more than 25 people per open hour.

During its first year the Library Connection offered 148 public programs, including storytimes in English, Armenian, Spanish and Persian, a teen Job Workshop, a DJ workshop, Family Movie Nights, craft programs, game days that include Wii, Bingo and board games, animation and cartooning workshops, performances by musical groups, story theater, puppet performances, magicians, a dance group, the Hoover Jazz Band, and an author appearance.

"Helpful assistance, great customer service!"
