How do I find a book in the online catalog? |
DID YOU KNOW?
You can also search the online catalog from your computer at home or at work. This catalog looks a little different from the catalog in the Library. Click the "Help" button to read about the catalog and how it works.
You can search the online catalog in the Library on your own. Type "?" on the search screen to read about the catalog and how it works.
To search the catalog, first choose how you want to search: By author, title, subject, or words. Use the arrow keys to move the white bar up or down to choose author, title, subject or word search.
Type in your search:
If you know the author of the book, type the last name first:
If you know the title of the book, type the EXACT title:
If you know the subject, type the subject words:
About subjects: Libraries use the Library of Congress Subject Headings. These subject words are not always the same as the way we speak. For example, we say "cookbooks," but the Library of Congress uses "cookery." So a book on Russian cooking has the subject
You may need to try more than one subject. Or, try a "word search". A word search finds books with those words in the title, contents, author or subject. This kind of search will find many more books.
If you don't find what you need in the catalog, ask a Librarian to help you.
About other languages: The online catalog uses only English letters, so you will not be able to look up Korean books in the Korean language or Armenian books in the Armenian language.
